THE SACRIFICE ZONE

Life in an industrial wasteland

Our award winning film The Sacrifice Zone, exposes one of the most toxic neighborhoods in America and celebrates the people who are fighting for a just, vibrant, and sustainable community. The film follows Maria Lopez-Nuñez, a Honduran-American resident of Newark, NJ, who is determined to break the cycle of poor communities of color serving as dumping grounds. Maria is part of the Ironbound Community Corporation which after a decade-long battle, helped to pass the strongest environmental justice law in the nation.

This 30-min documentary, combined with discussion guides and a companion video, serve as a playbook for organizers, environmentalists, educators, and legislators who want to increase awareness and take action. Since the film was released, 110 screenings hosted by a wide range of local and national groups, festivals and universities have engaged audiences in conversations about ways to participate in sustainable practices and work for racial equity.

“I can’t call it anything other than a sacrifice zone – a zone that’s been deemed, these lives don’t matter as much.”

— MARIA LOPEZ-NUÑEZ
