Newest Americans looks at post-1965 immigration as the driving force behind America’s changing identity. Talking Eyes co-founded Newest Americans in 2013 with Rutgers University Newark and VII Photo to create an accurate representation of the pluralistic society we inhabit and the historic drivers that brought us here.

The project centers Newark, NJ, a minority majority city, as a beacon for the rest of the country. We deploy a range of storytelling approaches to examine the diverse cultural intersections within and emanating out of the city. This hyper-local approach reveals truths with global significance.

As the production team behind the project, we have created a robust digital platform spanning film, photography, audio stories, written narratives, story maps, a geo-locator poetry app, and several interactive experiences. We also generate extensive public programming around the media, and have helped design college and high school curriculum geared toward supporting the next generation of storytellers.

THE NEWARK STORY BUS

The Newest Americans Story Bus is a mobile media lab for sharing and collecting the rich stories that make Newark a global city. The bus contains a sound booth and portrait studio designed to gather audiovisual histories from residents and workers in the city.

The Story Bus launched in summer 2021 with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, Rutgers University-Newark, NJPAC, Audible, Amazon, and the NJ Arts & Culture Recovery Fund.

Monuments to Migration & Labor

Newest Americans has teamed up with Monuments to Migration & Labor, a three-year initiative to examine the vital contributions of immigrant and migrant laborers to the State of New Jersey. Through extensive community dialogue, residents are helping define the way we memorialize foreign-born workers. Artists Michelle Angela Ortiz, Chat Travieso and Immanuel Oni have been commissioned to create public art inspired by these findings. We have been collecting voices of the participants on our Story Bus
