Through a unique healing-centered approach, UnCommon Law is transforming the criminal justice system by providing counseling and legal assistance for people serving lengthy prison sentences. Nearly 35,000 Californians are serving life sentences with the possibility of parole, yet fewer than 20% of these inmates are likely to be released from prison. Led by Keith Wattley, UnCommon Law is successfully preparing inmates for their parole hearing, providing them with mental health services, and representing them at their hearings. The holistic approach has had profound success - 81% of UnCommon Law’s cases last year resulted in an inmate’s release from prison, as compared to the state-appointed parole success rate of 18%.
