APEN effectively builds AAPI power and influence through leadership training, grassroots organizing, policy advocacy, and civic engagement. Operating at the intersection of civic engagement and environmental justice movements, APEN’s core innovation is developing an effective model of power building within AAPI communities and infusing AAPI perspectives into multi-ethnic justice movements. APEN’s leader, Miya Yoshitani, has spearheaded ambitious efforts, such as the California Green New Deal, and guided APEN’s members toward state and local policy victories that have resulted in numerous environmental protections, investments in low-income communities, and increased opportunities for affordable housing.
